What is Cub Scouts

WHO WE ARE

Pack 1199 is composed of Kindergarten through 5th grade boys, girls, and their parents. The majority of our scouts are from Great Seneca Creek Elementary, Ronald McNair Elementary, Spark Matsunaga Elementary, and the surrounding area. We are part of the Seneca District of the National Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts of America.

WHAT WE DO

We provide scouts with a fun and structured program that instills qualities of character and leadership, teaches and advocates good citizenship, and develops emotional, physical, and mental fitness.

WHERE WE DO IT

We meet in one large group (the pack) once per month at Trinity United Methodist Church in Germantown, Maryland, and in smaller groups (the dens) 1 to 2 times per month at one or more parents' homes or community sites. We also enjoy pack hiking, camping, educational, and service events throughout the year.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST

Our Pack's annual registration fee is $250.00 per new scout and $200.00 per returning scout. Once registered, your scout will begin to receive Boys' Life magazine, a monthly magazine published just for Cub Scouts. In addition, we expect all scouts to raise at least $60 in our Hike-a-thon.  If either of these amounts are considered a hardship to your family, please discuss alternatives with the Pack leaders.

HOW WE DO IT

Each scout joins a den based upon their grade. Lions are Kindergartners. Tigers are 1st graders. Wolves are 2nd graders. Bears are 3rd graders. Webelos are 4th and 5th graders. Each level of Cub Scouts has a handbook. The handbook has requirements that the scouts fulfill before they are promoted to the next level of scouting. There are also electives that the scouts can complete to earn belt loops, patches, beads, and other awards. The requirements and electives are all fun, plus they help our children build character, become good citizens, and develop personal fitness. Many activities are family-centered and can be completed at home with the help of the scout's parent or guardian.

Each den generally consists of 7 - 9 boys and girls, and their parents/guardians. One or more of the adults lead the den. The dens meet 1 to 2 times per month for about an hour. Den meetings are designed so that the scouts have fun with other kids their age. They are great for helping your child to build lasting friendships! Additionally, activities at the den meetings help the scouts complete their requirements and electives in an enjoyable group setting. The meetings include things like crafts, skits, and games. The meetings are also a time when the scouts get to explore exciting age-appropriate topics. For example, 1st grade Tigers might talk about wild animals in preparation for a trip to the National Zoo. Webelos in 4th and 5th grades might learn and practice map reading and first aid in preparation for an overnight campout with their parents. Our dens also go on outings such as to a local airport, quarry, bakery, radio station, police station, and have also gone to plays and snow-tubing. Our entire pack goes on a weekend camping trip at least twice per year.

The pack meets once a month for about an hour. Pack meetings are based on a monthly theme highlighting one aspect of the scout law. These meetings are jam-packed with activities and other fun happenings. In addition to the meetings, the pack will sometimes have pack-wide activities including the Pinewood Derby race, the Rain Gutter Regatta race, the model rocket building and launching, food drives, a great picnic, and community service projects.
